Roll Red Roll – a panel-discussion with Outspoken Sex Ed

OUR PARTNER ORGANISATION OUTSPOKEN SEX ED PRESENTS:

A post-film panel discussion around consent, masculinity, rape culture and social media.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

Outspoken Sex Ed will be on a panel discussion following the rare UK screening of the chilling new award-winning documentary Roll Red Roll, which is about high-school sexual assault in small-town America and the aftermath once a vast social-media cover-up was exposed.

The Guardian called the film “tough yet vital” and produced a related 14-minute short, Anonymous Comes To Town.

ROLL RED ROLL looks at the story – uncovered by crime blogger Alexandria Goddard – of collusion among teen bystanders, teachers, parents and coaches that changed the town of Steubenville, Ohio, forever. Reconstructing the night of the crime and its aftermath, the film asks: why didn’t anyone stop it? As director Nancy Schwartzman says of ROLL RED ROLL: “It shifts the focus onto the behaviour, the boys, the witnesses. What are these male-to-male allegiances? What’s the language being used? And where can young men see themselves in the story?”

Panel discussion topics include consent, “boys will be boys” attitudes, rape culture, social-media bullying, peer pressure and more.

The panel line-up

A fundraiser for the Camden branch of the Women’s Equality Party, the screening is on at the Lexi Cinema, Kensal Green, London NW10.
