Sex Education for the 21st Century

SEXPLAIN’S ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2019 ASKS: WHAT DOES SEX EDUCATION FIT FOR THE 21ST CENTURY LOOK LIKE?

We live in an age of increasing digital connectivity: we no longer develop our relationships, or express and understand our identity through face-to-face interactions alone. Particularly for those at school, online and offline worlds are no longer distinct entities, and play ever more significant part in their learning, personal interactions and well-being.

But, this change is taking place at such a rate that we are failing to adequately support young people to navigate digitally-facilitated issues such as unsolicited dick pics, online harassment, image-based abuse, trolling, targeted advertising, body shaming posts, internet misinformation and more.

Blocking, or reducing social media or internet use is not a long term or viable solution; increased media literacy and educate young people about digital rights and responsibilities is urgently needed (Livingstone and Third, 2017).

Sex and relationships education classes can play a key role in equipping young people with these critical tools and knowledge. This conference will explore what needs to be included in a truly 21st Century sex education; how we can take stock of digital defence and activism strategies young people already use; and how we can address matters such as online dating, pornography and sexting in a way which foregrounds young people's digital and sexual rights.

This conference will hear from young people, educators and researchers though a variety of interactive workshops, panel discussions and talks.
